“LOW WALL - LOUD NAMES”
LIME LITE LIQUOR
HOLLYWOOD AND LA BREA - HOLLYWOOD - CA
JUNE 2022
Tucked away in a sketchy alley near Hollywood and La Brea, during the day, safely navigated by a handful… as the evening turns to black it becomes fully active, let’s say underground market, stay long enough you can come up on anything you want. ‘LOW WALL, LOUD NAMES’ is a visual documentary of territorial expression, urban survival, and unspoken hierarchies. This isn’t some “legal” yard, it’s quick, it’s fast, and can say so much. It’s ever changing, this is street gospel. This section of the wall separates the Hollywood La Brea Motel motel, no stranger to criminal behavior, frequent police visits, late-night altercations, and neighborhood drift.
The names thrown-up and sprawled across the cinderblock and its layers of paint, both sprayed and rolled. Here we have TEFLON, KROMOS, REZOH, CANS (MTA), ZONER (MTA), BBAER. These names speak, sometimes very loud. You know who is getting up the most, who’s is the cleanest, and the spot. The tag above TEFLON’s effort, J2H “JUST TO HATE” is more than a flourish. It’s a challenge, not straight dissing this one crossing it out. The name above it serves as a compliment and call out. This could be the beginning of full-on graffiti warfare.
Each name earns its real estate, some more than others, that’s just my opinion, on style, I’ down for a certain types if graffiti. This stood for a good minute, weeks, sometimes replaced with previous name sprayed once more, more likely with a new, style, CANS and ZONER are up everywhere in the neighborhood, quality work achieved in highly visible and difficult to access.
Maybe one of these writers will still be getting up in five, ten, twenty years. At certain stages a writer or(ex) will see a name from years before, scrawled some place, either recently done, or has stood the test of time. Perhaps one of these will still be able to feel the magic which means so much to some.
